About the view

Regent Street Rainy Evening

A red double-decker bus cuts through the foreground, its headlights burning amber against the slick, rain-darkened street. The view looks down Regent Street on a wet London evening, the wide pavement alive with the silhouettes of figures moving beneath umbrellas. A tall ornate lamp post anchors the left side of the composition, its warm globes casting rings of gold that dissolve into the blue-grey mist beyond. The grand facades of the buildings recede into the distance, pale and atmospheric, while the wet road mirrors everything in loose streaks of red, orange and silver. Cool blues hold the sky and the middle distance; rich amber claims the near ground. The contrast is vivid and tender at once.

The history & when to go

Regent Street was laid out in the early nineteenth century to connect Carlton House in St James's with Regent's Park to the north, designed by the architect John Nash as a grand ceremonial route. The curving sweep known as the Quadrant is among the most recognizable streetscapes in Europe, and the road has been a centre of London commerce and public life for more than two hundred years. The double-decker bus has become one of the most enduring symbols of London itself.

The scene is at its most atmospheric in autumn and winter, when early dusks and frequent rain conspire to make every lamp post a lantern and every puddle a mirror.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
