About the view

Big Ben Clock Tower

The view looks across the Thames at dusk, with Big Ben rising at the center of the composition against a sky flooded with deep rose, violet, and streaks of cooling blue. The tower glows from within, its clock face burning a vivid amber-gold that anchors the whole scene. To the left, the long silhouette of the Palace of Westminster stretches along the riverbank, its warm windows mirrored in the darkening water below. A bridge arches gracefully to the right, its lamp posts dotting the twilight in small points of gold. The swirling sky presses down close, dramatic and alive, while the river holds all that color in soft, shifting reflection.

The history & when to go

Big Ben is the name widely used for the great bell housed inside the Elizabeth Tower, which stands at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London. The tower was completed in 1859 and has kept public time for the city ever since. The Palace itself has served as the home of the UK Parliament for centuries, making this corner of Westminster one of the most historically significant sites in the country. The clock tower underwent extensive restoration work completed in 2022, returning its familiar face to full working order.

For this particular quality of light — that deep, saturated dusk glow — the south bank of the Thames in the hour after sunset offers vivid views.
