About the view

Big Ben Parliament Street

A vivid red telephone box anchors the left side of the scene, its lacquered panels glowing against warm stone facades that rise on either side of Parliament Street. The view draws the eye straight down the wide, quiet pavement toward Big Ben, whose clock tower climbs into a pale golden sky with quiet authority. Early light washes the whole composition in honey and amber, softening the long shadows that stretch across the paving stones and turning the distant Elizabeth Tower almost luminous at the far end of the street. The palette shifts gradually from that deep, saturated red in the foreground to the hazy cream and gold of the middle distance, giving the scene a sense of calm depth.

The history & when to go

Big Ben is the name commonly given to the great bell inside the Elizabeth Tower, the northern tower of the Palace of Westminster in London. The tower itself was completed in 1859 and has marked the hours for the city ever since. The Palace of Westminster serves as the seat of the UK Parliament, housing both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and the site has held royal and parliamentary significance since the eleventh century. The tower underwent extensive restoration work completed in 2022, returning its clock faces to their historic Prussian blue.

Early morning on Parliament Street, before the day fully stirs, is when this view is at its most quietly spectacular.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of London finds a home on your wall.
