About the view

Notting Hill Coloured Terraces

A row of terraced houses stretches along a quiet Notting Hill street, their facades running through a full spectrum of soft lavender, pale white, and a bold hot pink that anchors the eye before the line of homes recedes gently into the distance. The view is taken from street level, close enough to feel the intimacy of the neighbourhood, with iron railings and a lone bicycle adding to the unhurried, lived-in mood. Overhead, a canopy of deep pink blossom sweeps in from the upper left, its warm coral tones set against a pale blue sky streaked with light cloud. The whole composition glows with the particular brightness of a clear spring morning in London.

The history & when to go

Notting Hill's coloured terraces date largely from the mid-nineteenth century, when the area was developed as a residential neighbourhood of large three- and four-storey homes. Over the following century the district changed considerably, becoming one of London's most diverse and culturally significant communities. The annual Notting Hill Carnival, established in the 1960s, grew to become the largest street festival in Europe.

Late April and May offer the best chance to find the blossom at its peak alongside the bright facades, when low morning light keeps the colours crisp and the streets are at their most still.
