About the view

Shirakawa Canal Cherry Blossoms

The view looks straight along the Shirakawa Canal at dusk, the water running calm and narrow between low stone embankments in Kyoto's Gion district. Blossom-laden branches arch from the left in full, cloud-like bloom, their pale pink blooms so dense they nearly fill the upper half of the composition. Opposite them, trailing green curtains of a weeping tree drape down from the right, their vivid colour a cool contrast to all that soft rose. The sky has deepened to a rich teal blue, and warm amber lanterns along the canal path cast long gold ribbons across the water's surface. Dark-timbered buildings line both banks, their windows glowing with the amber light of early evening, drawing the eye toward a small bridge in the middle distance.

The history & when to go

The Shirakawa Canal runs through the Gion district, one of Kyoto's most historically preserved neighbourhoods. The area has long been associated with the city's geisha culture, and the streets and waterways around it retain much of the architectural character of the Edo period. During spring, the canal path becomes one of the most celebrated blossom-viewing spots in the city, its combination of water, lanterns, old timber facades and flowering trees creating a scene that feels particular to Kyoto and nowhere else.

The blossoms along the canal typically peak in late March to early April, and the view is especially striking at dusk, when the lantern light begins to compete with the fading sky.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kyoto finds a home on your wall.
