About the view

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove Path

A narrow path draws the eye deep into the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, flanked on both sides by towering stalks that rise so densely they form a living corridor. The view is taken from ground level, looking straight ahead, so the tall green columns lean inward and meet above in a soft arch of layered canopy. Morning light breaks through from the far end, scattering gold across the pale pathway and catching the upper stalks in bright, almost luminous green. The lower reaches cool into blue-grey shadow, and dry amber grasses line the low fencing on either side, grounding the composition in warm earth tones. A single bare, dark-limbed form stands alone at the center of the path, silhouetted against the glow and adding a quiet stillness to the scene.

The history & when to go

The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove has been part of the Arashiyama district's cultural landscape for centuries, long associated with the noble and aristocratic families who built villas and temples throughout the area. The grove is located near Tenryu-ji, a Zen temple founded in the fourteenth century, and the path runs along its northern edge. The sound the grove makes in the wind is considered one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan, a designation that reflects how deeply it is woven into the country's sense of place.

Early morning on a weekday offers the calmest experience of the path, when the light filters low through the canopy and the grove holds its characteristic quiet.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kyoto finds a home on your wall.
