About the view

Golden Pavilion Pond Reflection

Kinkaku-ji rises from the far bank in a blaze of gold, its tiered roof catching the full warmth of an autumn afternoon against a clear blue sky. The view is taken from across the pond, framed on both sides by branches ablaze in crimson and deep orange, their color so saturated it almost pulses against the cool water below. The pavilion's gilded upper stories reflect perfectly in the still surface, doubling the gold and drawing it down into the jade-green depths. Rounded stones break the near shoreline, softening the geometry, while forested hills roll away behind the temple in layers of russet and evergreen. The whole composition breathes — fire at the edges, stillness at the center.

The history & when to go

Kinkaku-ji, formally known as Rokuon-ji, began as a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in the late fourteenth century. After his death it was converted into a Zen Buddhist temple, as he had wished. The structure visitors see today is a faithful reconstruction completed in 1955, after the original was destroyed by fire in 1950. The temple complex is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is among the most visited places in Japan.

Late November brings the autumn color to its peak around the pond, when the low-angled light deepens every reflection and the air carries a welcome chill.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kyoto finds a home on your wall.
