About the view

Fushimi Inari Torii Gates

A lone figure walks away from us along the stone path of Fushimi Inari, robes and parasol both a deep vermilion that dissolves almost completely into the surrounding gates. The view is taken from low and close, looking straight down the corridor as it curves gently to the left and recedes into a warm amber glow. Hundreds of tall, closely spaced torii frame the scene in receding rectangles of burnt orange and crimson, their edges catching light that seems to come from somewhere far ahead. Deep shadows pool at the base of each gate, striping the pale paving stones beneath the figure's feet. The entire canvas is held in a narrow palette — red, amber, near-black — making the cool lavender of those shadowed stones feel like a quiet breath in an otherwise incandescent scene.

The history & when to go

Fushimi Inari Taisha is one of Japan's most visited Shinto shrines, dedicated to Inari, the deity associated with rice, agriculture and prosperity. The thousands of torii lining the trails up the sacred mountain were donated over many centuries by individuals and businesses as expressions of gratitude, each gate bearing the donor's name. The shrine's origins are recorded as far back as the early eighth century, making it among the oldest of Kyoto's many sacred sites.

The corridor glows most intensely in the early morning hours, when slanted light filters through the gaps between gates and foot traffic is lightest.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kyoto finds a home on your wall.
