About the view

Mount Kazbek Sheep Drive

A dense river of cream-colored fleece fills the foreground, the flock moving steadily down the center of a mountain road straight toward the viewer. Woolly backs press together, a few faces turning sideways, the herd narrowing as it recedes into the middle distance. On either side, broad slopes roll away in deep amber and burnt ochre, catching the warm light of late afternoon. A thin road curves between the hills with a silver thread of river beside it, and centered perfectly at the end of that corridor, Mount Kazbek rises into pale blue sky, its snow-covered peak luminous against soft cloud. Every line in the composition pulls toward that white summit.

The history & when to go

Mount Kazbek is one of the highest peaks in the Caucasus and has been a sacred landmark in Georgian culture for centuries. In Georgian mythology it is associated with Amirani, a figure comparable to Prometheus, said to be chained to the mountain. The peak sits on the border between Georgia and Russia and draws mountaineers from around the world. The seasonal movement of flocks along the Georgian Military Highway, a road with origins in the nineteenth century, remains a living part of highland tradition in Kazbegi.

Early autumn is the finest time to witness the sheep drives in person, when the animals descend from summer pastures and the valley grasses have turned their richest gold.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kazbegi finds a home on your wall.
