About the view

Gergeti Trinity Church Kazbegi

A snow-covered ridge rises out of the lower frame, its warm-toned rocky outcrops just breaking through the white, and perched on its crest sit the compact forms of Gergeti Trinity Church. The view looks up at the complex from below and slightly to the south, so that the conical drum of the main church and the open bell tower beside it stand silhouetted against a vast sweep of blue sky and glacier. Behind them, a deeply shadowed peak fills nearly the entire upper half of the composition, its flanks a blue-grey wash of shadow and its summit a blinding cap of white. The palette is a study in contrast: the honey-gold of the warm stone buildings glowing against the cold blues and whites that surround them on every side.

The history & when to go

Gergeti Trinity Church, outside Kazbegi, was built in the fourteenth century and belongs to the Georgian Orthodox Church. Positioned at roughly 2,170 metres above sea level on a ridge of the Caucasus, it served for centuries as a place of refuge, and sacred treasures from Mtskheta were reportedly brought here for safekeeping during times of invasion. The complex includes the main church and a bell tower, both of which remain an active place of worship today.

Late spring and early autumn offer a rewarding balance of clear skies and accessible trails, though winter visits like the one captured here reward anyone willing to make the climb.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kazbegi finds a home on your wall.
