About the view

Kazbegi Mineral Springs Valley

A vivid turquoise pool fills the foreground, its water so saturated it reads almost electric against the warm, rust-orange and amber terrain that cradles it. From this low vantage point at the valley floor, the eye follows a pale jade river as it winds through broad green meadows stretching deep into the Kazbegi Mineral Springs Valley, growing narrower with distance until it disappears between the flanks of the mountains. Snow-covered peaks dominate the upper half of the scene, their white caps brilliant under a wide cobalt sky scattered with billowing clouds. On the right ridge, the silhouette of an ancient stone structure holds its ground above the valley. The contrast of vivid teal water, iron-red terrain, lush lowland grass, and glacial white summits gives the composition a depth that feels almost impossible to take in all at once.

The history & when to go

The mineral springs of the Kazbegi region are fed by mineral-rich groundwater that has dissolved iron and other minerals over centuries, staining the surrounding terrain in striking shades of rust, gold, and ochre. The area sits within the Greater Caucasus, one of the world's great mountain systems, and has been home to human settlement for thousands of years, with the Caucasian highlands serving as a crossroads of cultures and trade routes across recorded history.

The valley shows its most dramatic colors in late spring and early summer, when snowmelt swells the rivers and the meadows reach their deepest green.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kazbegi finds a home on your wall.
