About the view

Gergeti Trinity Church Kazbegi

Gergeti Trinity Church crowns a steep green ridge in Kazbegi, and this scene captures it at first light, when the rising sun catches the warm stone walls and turns them a deep amber-rose. The view looks across a wide valley floor, still pooled with morning mist, toward the ridge where the church and its companion bell tower stand side by side against the full mass of the mountain behind them. That mountain fills the upper half of the composition — snow-covered flanks flushed pink and gold at the summit, ridgelines dropping into deep blue-purple shadow — while the rolling hills below glow in saturated greens. A winding road threads the ridge from lower right to the church, giving the eye a path to follow upward through the scene.

The history & when to go

Gergeti Trinity Church was built in the fourteenth century and belongs to the Georgian Orthodox tradition. Positioned at roughly 2,170 meters above sea level, it served for centuries as a place of refuge, and important relics and Saint Nino's Cross were brought here for safekeeping during times of invasion. The church remains an active place of worship today and is one of the most recognized landmarks in the Caucasus.

The view is at its most dramatic in summer, when the meadows are fully green and the high passes are clear — though spring and autumn bring their own extraordinary light to the mountain above.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kazbegi finds a home on your wall.
