About the view

Gveleti Waterfall Kazbegi

A single white ribbon of water drops straight down through a narrow split in the cliffs, landing in a rush of foam and scatter among dark, rounded boulders at the base. The view is taken from almost ground level, looking directly up the gorge at Gveleti Waterfall, with Kazbegi's sky opening in a pale blue strip between the canyon walls above. Vivid moss-green clings to every ledge and shelf of the dark rock faces, and loose clusters of bright leafy trees press in from both sides, their yellowy greens catching what sunlight filters down into the gorge. The water itself is rendered in long, silky whites and cool greys, contrasting sharply with the rough, shadowed stone that frames it on all sides. The foreground boulders anchor the composition, wet and dark at the water's edge, giving the whole scene a satisfying sense of depth and scale.

The history & when to go

Gveleti Waterfall cascades down a gorge cut through the volcanic terrain of the Greater Caucasus, fed by snowmelt and glacial streams from the mountains above. The gorge and surrounding area fall within the Kazbegi National Park, established to protect the high-altitude landscapes and ecosystems of this part of Georgia. The trail into the gorge has long been a draw for walkers exploring the region around Stepantsminda, offering one of the most accessible yet genuinely dramatic natural sights in the Caucasus.

The falls are fullest and most forceful in late spring and early summer, when snowmelt is at its peak and the gorge walls are draped in their deepest green.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Kazbegi finds a home on your wall.
