About the view

Great Wall of China Watchtower

The view draws you straight into the scene — standing on the walkway of the Great Wall of China itself, looking uphill toward a broad watchtower that rises squarely against a soft, luminous sky. Warm stone tones run along the crenellated parapet walls as they curve away to the left and recede into haze on the right, the path between them pulling the eye forward with a steady, satisfying rhythm. Autumn has arrived in full force on the hillsides below: a blaze of deep crimson from a single tree anchors the left foreground, while amber and russet spread through the canopy around it. Above, the sky dissolves into dusty rose and pale lavender, as though the light itself can't quite decide between dawn and dusk.

The history & when to go

The Great Wall's watchtowers served as the wall's nerve centers — places where soldiers could shelter, store supplies, and signal one another across vast distances using smoke and fire. Construction on the most celebrated sections was undertaken during the Ming dynasty, which ruled from 1368 to 1644, and it is those Ming-era towers that have become the wall's defining image. The structure was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and remains one of the most visited monuments on earth.

Autumn, roughly late October through early November, brings the hillside foliage to its peak color, when the landscape surrounding the wall glows in shades that mirror the warmth of this watercolor-style canvas perfectly.
