About the view

Jinli Ancient Street Lanterns

The view draws you straight into Jinli Ancient Street at nightfall, the perspective pulling deep along the narrow lane until figures dissolve into a soft haze of color at the far end. On the right, row upon row of glowing red lanterns cascade from the eaves in an unbroken chain, their warm amber light pooling across the damp paving stones below in streaks of coral and rose. On the left, rounder lanterns hang at varying heights outside open shopfronts, spilling golden light onto clusters of lush green foliage at street level. Above it all, trailing branches catch the glow and turn luminous green against a deep cobalt sky, framing the scene like a canopy pulled between the rooftops of Chengdu.

The history & when to go

Jinli Street is one of the oldest commercial districts in Sichuan, with roots stretching back more than 1,800 years. It sits beside the Wuhou Shrine, the memorial complex dedicated to figures of the Shu Han kingdom from China's Three Kingdoms period, and the two sites have long drawn visitors together. The street was restored in the early 2000s to preserve its traditional architectural character, and it has since become a celebrated gathering place for food, folk craft, and Sichuan opera culture.

Early evening, just after dusk, is when the lanterns reach their full brilliance against the darkening sky — arriving then rewards you with the exact quality of light captured here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Chengdu finds a home on your wall.
