About the view

Giant Panda Breeding Research Base

A giant panda sits front and center here, utterly at ease, clutching a generous bundle of green leaves to its face with both rounded paws. The view is close and unhurried, the animal filling the frame against a backdrop of tall, golden-green stalks and warm wooden fencing that recedes softly into shadow. The light is gentle and diffused, casting the scene in rich greens and deep amber, while the panda's bold black-and-white markings anchor the composition like ink dropped into watercolor. There is a contentment to the moment — leaves spilling, eyes half-interested in the viewer — that feels entirely unposed.

The history & when to go

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was established in 1987 with the goal of protecting and increasing the giant panda population through scientific breeding programs. Beginning with just a small number of rescued pandas, the facility has grown into one of the most successful giant panda conservation programs in the world, contributing animals to breeding initiatives both within China and internationally. The giant panda is recognized globally as a symbol of wildlife conservation, and the Chengdu base has played a meaningful role in the species' ongoing recovery.

Early morning is when the pandas are most active and the light through the tall stalks is at its most golden — well worth arriving at the gates when they first open.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Chengdu finds a home on your wall.
