Jinli Ancient Street Lanterns
The view draws you straight down the heart of Jinli Ancient Street at dusk, looking along a corridor of warm-toned facades that lean inward as the lane recedes into the distance. Dozens of red lanterns hang overhead in overlapping rows, their amber glow deepening to scarlet at the edges and bleeding down onto the wet stone pathway below, which mirrors the light in long copper streaks. Above the lanterns, the sky has shifted to a cool twilight blue — that narrow window between day and night — and the contrast between that stillness above and the burning warmth below gives the whole scene an almost electric tension. Ornate doorways with dark carved panels anchor either side, their details catching the lantern light in flickers of gold and shadow.
The history & when to go
Jinli Ancient Street sits beside the Wuhou Shrine complex in Chengdu, one of China's most celebrated sites dedicated to the memory of the Three Kingdoms period. The shrine itself honors figures from that era, and the street alongside it was developed to reflect the commercial character of the Sichuan region during those centuries. Red lanterns have long carried cultural significance in China as symbols of good fortune and celebration, and Jinli has become one of the most recognized places in the country to experience that tradition.
The blue-hour window captured here — just after sunset when the lanterns glow brightest against the darkening sky — lasts only minutes, making early evening the ideal time to experience Jinli at its most luminous.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
I hope a little piece of Chengdu finds a home on your wall.
