About the view

Giant Panda Base Bamboo Grove

Three giant pandas settle into the undergrowth of the Giant Panda Base bamboo grove in Chengdu, completely absorbed in their own unhurried world. Tall green stalks rise around them in dense vertical columns, catching a warm, diffuse backlight that pools in gold and amber through the right side of the composition. The pandas' bold black-and-white markings anchor the scene against layers of deep forest green — feathery ground cover, fallen stems, and the soft blur of foliage pushing in from every edge. One sits slightly higher than the others, a sprig of green held loosely in its paw, while its two companions lean in from either side, each wearing the same expression of cheerful, unruffled contentment.

The history & when to go

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was established in 1987 with the aim of protecting and increasing the giant panda population through conservation, research, and education. Giant pandas had been classified as endangered for decades before their status was updated to vulnerable in 2016, a shift that conservationists widely credited in part to breeding programs like this one. Today the base is one of the world's most recognized centers for panda conservation and receives visitors from across the globe.

Early morning is the best time to visit the grove in person, when the pandas are most active and the Sichuan light is at its softest and most golden.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Chengdu finds a home on your wall.
