About the view

Great Wall of China Jinshanling

The view stretches from atop a high ridge at Jinshanling, where the Great Wall of China sweeps across the frame in a long, confident curve, climbing and dipping with the contours of the forested hills. Morning light falls warm and golden across the pale amber tones of the wall's broad walkway, casting soft shadows behind each battlement and catching the faces of the watchtowers in vivid relief. The surrounding hillsides are saturated in deep summer greens, and a scatter of small orange blooms pushes up close to the wall in the foreground, bright against the cool shade below. Layers of blue-green ridges recede into a pale sky overhead, giving the whole scene a sense of tremendous, unhurried distance.

The history & when to go

Construction at Jinshanling took place primarily during the Ming dynasty, with much of the work completed in the latter half of the sixteenth century. The section is widely regarded as one of the best-preserved stretches of the wall, retaining many of its original defensive features, including closely spaced watchtowers and double-sided battlements designed to allow defenders to fight in either direction. The Great Wall as a whole, built and rebuilt across many centuries and dynasties, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

Late spring and early summer bring the hillsides to their fullest green, when the light is long and the ridges glow before the midday haze settles in.
