About the view

Great Wall Snow Tower

The view climbs straight up the centre of the scene, following snow-dusted steps as they rise ridge after ridge toward a solitary watchtower on the Great Wall of China. Thick cloud rolls in from every side, swallowing the frozen slopes and leaving the tower half-dissolved in pale grey mist. A faint amber glow behind the tower hints at a sun that barely breaks through, casting the whole composition in tones of silver, slate and soft white. Frost-covered shrubs cling to the hillside, their shapes blurred by the fog until they become part of the cloud itself. The perspective pulls the eye upward with quiet urgency, the stepped path narrowing as it disappears into the murk above.

The history & when to go

The Great Wall was built and rebuilt over many centuries, with major construction carried out during the Ming dynasty between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries. Watchtowers like the one at the centre of this scene served as signal posts, garrison shelters and lookout points along the wall's route across the mountains north of Beijing. The wall as a whole is recognized as one of the great feats of human construction, and in 1987 it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Winter, particularly after a fresh snowfall, is when this stretch of the wall feels most remote and elemental — arriving early in the morning gives the best chance of catching the mist before it lifts.
