About the view

Dublin Riverfront Cable Bridge

The Samuel Beckett Bridge sweeps across the canvas in a single bold arc, its slender cables fanning downward like the strings of a harp suspended against a blazing Dublin sky. The view looks straight along the River Liffey, with low quayside buildings glowing amber on both banks, their warm lights just beginning to flicker on as evening takes hold. Above, the sky is the real spectacle — wide streaks of deep coral, rose, and violet pulling across the frame in long horizontal ribbons, the whole scene mirrored with extraordinary stillness in the water below. The bridge's pale arch and its reflection form a near-perfect ellipse at the center of the composition, cool and calm against all that burning color.

The history & when to go

The Samuel Beckett Bridge opened in 2009 and was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. It was conceived as a civic landmark as much as a crossing, and its harp-like silhouette was a deliberate nod to the national symbol of Ireland. The bridge connects Sir John Rogerson's Quay on the south side of the Liffey to Guild Street on the north, serving both pedestrians and traffic in the heart of the rejuvenated Docklands quarter.

Late autumn and winter evenings tend to produce the richest skies over the Liffey, when the sun sets early and low, flooding the water with the kind of color captured here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Dublin finds a home on your wall.
