About the view

Ha'penny Bridge River Liffey

The view stretches along the River Liffey from river level, looking upstream toward the Ha'penny Bridge in Dublin as morning light spills across the scene from the right. The elegant white arch of the bridge curves gently over the water, its ornate railings catching the pale golden warmth of early sun. Behind it, a long terrace of brick facades runs the length of the quay — deep russet, burnt amber and muted coral — broken at intervals by full green canopies of leafy trees. To the far left, a verdigris dome rises above the roofline, its cool blue-green a quiet contrast to all that warmth. The sky is soft and luminous, touched with loose cloud, and the Liffey below mirrors the entire scene with glassy precision — the bridge, the buildings, the trees and the light all doubled in still water, so that the composition feels almost perfectly balanced between the real city and its reflection.

The history & when to go

The Ha'penny Bridge opened in 1816, making it one of the oldest cast-iron pedestrian bridges in the world. Its popular name comes from the halfpenny toll that was charged to cross it for much of the nineteenth century. The bridge was restored and its original off-white finish renewed in the early 2000s, and it remains a pedestrian-only crossing to this day.

Early morning, before the quays fill with traffic, is when the Liffey runs calmest and the reflections hold longest — worth setting an alarm for.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Dublin finds a home on your wall.
