About the view

Baily Lighthouse Howth Head

The view looks out from the clifftop heights of Howth Head, where a sweep of vivid yellow blooms and deep magenta wildflowers fills the foreground in a riot of warm color. The headland rolls down toward the Irish Sea in long curves of saturated green, and at the cliff's edge, the Baily Lighthouse stands compact and assured — its white tower capped in red, a keeper's cottage settled quietly beside it. Beyond, the water shifts from teal to pale grey-blue as it reaches the horizon, where distant hills dissolve into soft coastal haze. The light is the gentle, even brightness of an Irish morning that might turn at any moment, casting no hard shadows, letting every shade of green and gold hold equal weight across the composition.

The history & when to go

The Baily Lighthouse has guided vessels into Dublin Bay since the late seventeenth century, making it one of Ireland's longest-serving coastal lights. Its current tower dates to 1814, and the light was automated in 1996, ending a continuous tradition of lighthouse keeping on the headland. The surrounding cliffs form part of a popular coastal walking route, and the lighthouse marks the southeastern tip of Howth Head, where the peninsula meets open sea.

Late spring and early summer bring the wildflowers to their fullest, when the headland blazes with color and the sea air is sharp and clear.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Dublin finds a home on your wall.
