Mount Otemanu Sunset Lagoon
A single overwater bungalow sits at the heart of this scene, its thatched roof warm against the almost unreal expanse of the Bora Bora lagoon. The view stretches outward from the water's surface level, making the shallow turquoise depths feel close enough to touch — shimmering gradients of aqua and teal rippling beneath the bungalow's stilted platform. A narrow walkway reaches back toward the viewer, drawing the eye inward before the composition opens wide into open water. Behind the bungalow, the island's dramatic volcanic peak cuts into a brilliant cobalt sky, flanked by cloud-softened ridgelines of deep green. The light is midday and confident, casting short, dark shadows beneath the structure and picking out every ripple in the lagoon.
The history & when to go
Overwater bungalows became synonymous with Bora Bora after the concept was pioneered in French Polynesia in the late 1960s. Perched above the lagoon on stilts, these structures were designed to bring guests into direct contact with the water beneath — some feature glass floor panels for viewing the reef below. The overwater bungalow has since become one of the most recognized symbols of luxury travel in the Pacific.
The lagoon glows most intensely between May and October, when the dry season keeps skies clear and the sun stays high enough to illuminate the water to its full depth.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
I hope a little piece of Bora Bora finds a home on your wall.
