About the view

Mount Otemanu Lagoon Sandbar

From a low, open vantage across the lagoon, the scene takes in a sweep of color that runs from pale ice-blue at the shallows to a deep, vivid turquoise where the water deepens toward the far shore. A narrow sandbar curves in from the lower left, its white surface catching full midday light, and two tall palms lean gently seaward from it, their shadows stretching long and dark across the sand. A single red outrigger canoe rests at anchor in the middle distance, its hull a warm coral accent against all that blue-green. Behind it, Mount Otemanu rises sharply into a bright sky stacked with soft white cloud, its dark peak trailing into dense green ridgelines that soften as they descend to the waterline. The whole composition breathes openness — sky, water, sand, and that one emphatic peak holding the horizon together.

The history & when to go

Mount Otemanu is the eroded core of the ancient volcano that formed Bora Bora. It rises to around 727 metres and is the island's highest point, a remnant of volcanic activity that shaped the entire Society Islands chain. The lagoon surrounding the island is protected by a barrier reef, creating the calm, sheltered waters visible here. The motus on the barrier reef have long been gathering points for local outrigger culture, which remains a living tradition in French Polynesia today.

The light is clearest and the water at its most saturated between May and October, when the dry season keeps the sky open and the lagoon close to glass.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Bora Bora finds a home on your wall.
