About the view

Bora Bora Lagoon Stingray

The view splits the world in two. Below the waterline, a stingray glides just above the pale sand floor, its dark, wing-like form casting a soft shadow as rippling light dances in shifting lattice patterns beneath the surface. The water around it burns a vivid aquamarine, so clear the sandy bed is visible in every detail. Above, a thin horizon line separates that luminous blue from a scene of deep green and dazzling sky: tall palms crowd a narrow white-sand motu, sunlight blazing through their canopies, and behind them the dramatic dark peak of Mount Otemanu rises into a brilliant cobalt sky streaked with a single drift of cloud. The composition draws the eye down and then up in one sweeping breath.

The history & when to go

Bora Bora's lagoon is a protected body of water enclosed by a barrier reef and a ring of small islets. Mount Otemanu, the remnant core of a volcano that formed the island roughly three to four million years ago, rises to around 727 meters and is the highest point in Bora Bora. The lagoon's shallow inner waters have long made the island a gathering place for rays, which are drawn to the sandy shallows and are a central part of the marine experience here.

The midday sun creates the most extraordinary underwater light in the shallows, but the hour or two before noon offers the clearest visibility and the richest color in the water.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Bora Bora finds a home on your wall.
