About the view

Mount Otemanu Rainbow Beach

The view opens from a pale arc of sand, its surface still damp and smooth, stretching across the lower third of the composition. Beyond it, the lagoon glows in bands of vivid turquoise and aquamarine — colors so saturated they seem lit from within. Mount Otemanu rises at the center of Bora Bora, its jagged volcanic spires veiled in soft grey mist and draped in deep green. The sky above is a wash of cool lavender and storm-blue, heavy with recent rain, and arching clean across the full width of the scene is a rainbow, its curve landing on either side of the peak as though the mountain summoned it. The light is diffuse and luminous, the kind that arrives only after a shower passes.

The history & when to go

Mount Otemanu is the highest point on Bora Bora, reaching approximately 727 meters above sea level. It is the eroded core of an ancient volcano that formed the island millions of years ago. Long sacred to the Polynesian people who settled these islands, the peak has served as a spiritual symbol for generations. Its near-vertical faces make a true summit extremely rare, and most visitors experience it from the water or the shore, watching it shift between clarity and cloud.

The rainbow moment captured here is most likely to happen in the wet season, roughly November through April, when brief tropical showers pass quickly and the sun breaks through to spectacular effect.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Bora Bora finds a home on your wall.
