About the view

Mount Otemanu Lagoon Reflection

Mount Otemanu crowns the scene from across the lagoon, its dark volcanic peak catching the last fire of a setting sun just behind its summit. The view stretches from a white sand shore in the foreground, where a single tall palm leans gracefully to the left, its fronds silhouetted against a sky that moves through peach and amber into soft lavender blue. The still lagoon below acts as a perfect mirror, doubling the mountain, the palm, and the entire burning horizon in tones of gold and teal. The composition has a quiet symmetry to it — the real world above, its reflection below, and a thin luminous seam of light where the two meet.

The history & when to go

Mount Otemanu is the eroded remnant of a shield volcano that formed Bora Bora millions of years ago. Rising to around 727 meters, it is the island's highest point and its most recognizable landmark. The surrounding lagoon, protected by a barrier reef, is home to a remarkable diversity of marine life. Bora Bora was strategically important during World War II, serving as a United States military supply base, and the island has been a symbol of South Pacific paradise in the wider world ever since.

The colors in this scene are truest to life around the dry season, roughly May through October, when skies are clearer and sunsets over the lagoon tend to be vivid and long.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Bora Bora finds a home on your wall.
