About the view

Beirut Traditional Lebanese Villa

Golden afternoon light floods the facade of a traditional Lebanese villa in Beirut, turning the warm stone a deep amber that seems almost to glow from within. The view is taken straight on at courtyard level, looking up at two generous stories of pointed arched windows framed by green shutters, their rich color sharp against the honeyed walls. A wrought-iron balcony runs across the upper floor, where clusters of arched openings echo one another in a rhythm that feels both grand and intimate. Below, terracotta pots line the courtyard, filled with small fruiting trees heavy with color, while an explosion of deep magenta blooms cascades from the left edge — vivid and unruly against the building's composed symmetry. The sky above is soft and pale, keeping all the warmth concentrated on the villa itself.

The history & when to go

This style of Lebanese townhouse rose to prominence in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, blending local building traditions with influences absorbed during the Ottoman period and the later French Mandate era. The signature triple-arched central window, known as the triple arcade, became one of the most recognized features of Lebanese domestic architecture. Many such villas were built by merchant and landowning families and remain deeply tied to Lebanese cultural identity, celebrated in literature, photography and preservation efforts across the country.

Late afternoon is the finest time to seek out these villas in person, when the low sun ignites their facades exactly as it does here.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
