About the view

Raouche Pigeon Rocks Beirut

Two massive warm-stone formations rise straight from the Mediterranean just off the western edge of Beirut, the larger one pierced at its base by a sweeping natural arch that frames the open sea beyond. The scene is caught at the golden hour, the sun dropping low behind the rocks and flooding the composition with amber and deep orange, the light burning through the arch like a lantern. Against that warmth, the water is a striking, almost electric turquoise that shifts toward deep teal in the foreground, where long slow waves trail white foam across the surface. The sky above opens into a clear, pale blue with just a blush of rose at the horizon, holding the whole scene in a moment of extraordinary calm.

The history & when to go

Raouche Rocks, also known as the Pigeon Rocks, are among the most recognized natural landmarks in Lebanon. They rise from the sea just offshore from the Raouche district on Beirut's western coast, and have served as a symbol of the city for generations. The formations were shaped over millennia by wave erosion, and the arch visible through the larger rock is a natural sea arch. The site has appeared in Lebanese art, literature and photography throughout the modern era, and remains a defining image of Beirut's relationship with the sea.

Late afternoon in the warmer months rewards visitors with exactly this quality of golden light, when the low sun aligns behind the rocks and the Mediterranean takes on its deepest color.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Beirut finds a home on your wall.
