About the view

Beirut Roman Baths Ruins

The view looks across the Roman Baths ruins from ground level, drawing the eye along a wide stone floor fractured by afternoon shadow. Tiered warm stone steps rise to the left in long horizontal bands, their amber and ochre tones deepening where the sun cuts hard angles across each ledge. To the right, a row of tall fluted columns catches the same midday light and glows a rich honey gold against a bright blue sky laced with thin white cloud. Beyond the open ruins, deep green tall palms and dark narrow trees push upward, framing a glimpse of modern buildings and a distant tower — the ancient and the contemporary sharing the same sky over Beirut.

The history & when to go

The Roman Baths in Beirut's downtown district are among the most significant Roman-era remains in the eastern Mediterranean. They date to the period when the city, then known as Berytus, was a flourishing Roman colony, and the site was part of a larger civic complex. Berytus was also home to one of the ancient world's most respected schools of Roman law, which drew students from across the empire for centuries. The ruins were discovered in 1968–69 and underwent further excavation and preservation during post-civil-war reconstruction of the downtown area in the 1990s, and they have been preserved as a public archaeological site.

The ruins are most striking visited on a clear morning, when the low sun sets the warm stone columns alight and the surrounding trees are still and vivid.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Beirut finds a home on your wall.
