About the view

Terracotta Army Warriors Xi'an

Three warriors stand in close formation, their deeply carved faces turned slightly toward the viewer as though caught mid-breath before a command is given. The scene looks along a diagonal row of figures that recedes into a warm, luminous haze — amber and ochre softening the background into something almost dreamlike. The foreground figures are rendered in rich, shadowed brown, their layered armor and knotted hair visible in quiet detail. A golden light suffuses the whole composition from behind, wrapping the column of the Terracotta Army in a glow that feels both ancient and immediate.

The history & when to go

These figures were created to accompany China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, in death, and were buried with him sometime around 210 BCE near the city of Xi'an. The discovery came in 1974, when local farmers digging a well encountered fragments that would lead to one of the most significant archaeological finds of the twentieth century. Estimates suggest thousands of individual figures were created, each with a distinct face, arranged in formations across several underground chambers. The site is now a UNESCO World Heritage property and draws visitors from around the world.

Visiting in spring or autumn puts you in the best light — literally and figuratively — with comfortable temperatures and the soft, diffused glow that the covered excavation pits lend to every hour of the day.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Xi'an finds a home on your wall.
