About the view

Giant Wild Goose Pagoda

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda rises at center frame, its seven tapering tiers climbing from a dense foreground of blossoming trees toward a pale, luminous sky. The view is taken from ground level among the blooms, so the canopy of soft pink and rose crowds every edge of the composition, parting just enough to reveal the tower's warm, honey-toned form. Light falls gently from the left, casting faint shadow lines across each receding tier and drawing the eye upward to the pointed spire. Feathery green foliage pushes in from the right, and the whole scene has that still, breath-held quality of early spring in Xi'an — the ancient and the ephemeral pressed together in the same quiet moment.

The history & when to go

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda was built during the Tang dynasty, completed around 652 CE under the patronage of Emperor Gaozong, to house Buddhist scriptures and relics that the monk Xuanzang brought back from his celebrated journey to India. Xuanzang himself oversaw its construction and worked within the temple complex to translate the texts he had traveled years to retrieve. The pagoda stands within the grounds of the Da Ci'en Temple complex, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor.

Spring, when the surrounding gardens are in full bloom, rewards a visit with exactly the layered beauty this watercolor-style canvas captures so well.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Xi'an finds a home on your wall.
