About the view

Tang Paradise Palace Lake

Dusk has just surrendered to night over Tang Paradise Palace Lake in Xi'an, and the sky holds that deep, luminous blue that exists only in the brief window between last light and full dark. Two tiered palace pavilions glow amber and gold from within, their sweeping upturned rooflines edged in warm light against the cobalt sky. To the right, an arched bridge curves gracefully toward the larger hall, its pale form lit from below so that each arch doubles itself in the still water beneath. The reflection is nearly perfect — warm towers, glowing bridge, and that deep blue sky all shimmering together across the lower half of the composition. A trail of willow branches drifts in from the upper right corner, soft and dark, grounding the scene in something quieter and more intimate.

The history & when to go

Tang Paradise opened in Xi'an in 2005 as a large-scale cultural park built near the original site of a Tang Dynasty imperial garden known as Furong Garden, which flourished during the Tang period — broadly the 7th through 10th centuries — one of the most celebrated eras in Chinese history. The Tang court was renowned across the ancient world for its openness to art, poetry, music, and foreign exchange, much of it flowing along the Silk Road that passed through Xi'an.

The lake view is at its most arresting after dark, when the illuminations deepen and the water stills enough to hold every reflection cleanly.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Xi'an finds a home on your wall.
