About the view

Xi'an Bell Tower Night

The Bell Tower rises from its broad platform at the very center of Xi'an, and this canvas catches it at the precise moment when dusk tips into night. The sky behind the tower is a deep, bruised blue, still holding the last blush of gold and amber low on the horizon. Against that cool field, the tower itself glows with concentrated warmth — uplighting washes the thick base walls in honey and cream, while the tiered rooflines, their turned edges tipped in verdigris green, recede upward toward a gilded finial. Arched passages in the base punctuate the light like lanterns, and each overhanging gallery catches the illumination in layers of ochre and burnt sienna. The view is straight-on and close, so the tower fills the frame with a quiet authority that feels both monumental and intimate.

The history & when to go

The Bell Tower was built during the Ming dynasty and has been a defining landmark of Xi'an ever since. It is one of the largest and best-preserved examples of Ming-era tower architecture in China. Originally constructed in the late fourteenth century and later relocated to its current position in the sixteenth century, it sits at the intersection of the city's four main arteries. The great bell once housed within was historically rung each morning to mark the start of the day.

If you plan to see this view in person, early evening in autumn or spring offers the most comfortable temperatures and reliably clear skies, when the tower's floodlights seem to burn brightest against the cooling dusk.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Xi'an finds a home on your wall.
