About the view

Salto Grande Waterfall

The view drops straight into the heart of the falls, level with the churning water as it crashes over dark, rounded rocks into a pool of vivid glacial turquoise. Salto Grande fills the foreground with a rush of white foam and frothy motion, the water dissolving into loose, luminous strokes of white and pale aqua. Beyond the falls, the river opens into a broad, jewel-bright channel, flanked by dense slopes of deep green. Rising above on both sides, the peaks of Torres del Paine climb toward a sky of brilliant, unbroken cobalt — snow-touched summits on the left, and to the right the jagged, shadowed towers that give the park its name. The light feels midday and cloudless, saturating every surface.

The history & when to go

Salto Grande forms where water rushes between two large glacial lakes, making it one of the most visited natural features within Torres del Paine National Park. The park itself was established in 1959 and later designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The falls are accessible via a short trail, and their roar and spray can be felt well before they come into view — an experience that has made them a defining landmark of Patagonian wilderness travel.

Summer months, from December through February, bring the longest daylight hours and the clearest skies, bathing the falls and peaks in the kind of saturated afternoon light captured here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Torres del Paine finds a home on your wall.
