About the view

Torres del Paine Guanacos Lake

Two guanacos pause on a windswept hillside above an impossibly vivid turquoise lake, their tawny coats catching the last warmth of a Patagonian dusk. The view looks across the water toward Torres del Paine's legendary tower peaks, which rise snow-draped and blue-shadowed into a sky dissolving from soft peach to cool lavender. Golden grasses ripple across the foreground slope, their amber warmth anchoring the composition before the eye lifts to the still, glassy lake and then higher still to those jagged, cloud-grazing summits. The whole scene is balanced between wildness and quiet — two animals at ease in a landscape that dwarfs everything around them.

The history & when to go

Torres del Paine National Park was established in 1959 and later designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The park's iconic granite towers, the Torres themselves, are among the most recognized natural formations in South America, drawing visitors and climbers from around the world. Guanacos are native to the park and live there year-round, having roamed Patagonia long before the region became protected land. Their presence throughout the park is one of the most reliable and enduring experiences it offers.

The pink and lavender skies seen here are most common in the shoulder seasons of October and March, when long sunsets linger well into the evening hours.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Torres del Paine finds a home on your wall.
