About the view

Santa Prisca Church Taxco

Two warm towers rise against a wide blue sky, their rich terracotta hue deepening where afternoon light catches the carved facades of Santa Prisca Church in Taxco. The view is taken from a slightly elevated angle, looking across a foreground of burnt-orange rooftiles toward the church's gilded dome and the elaborately ornamented entrance portal below it. Dense, rounded canopies of deep green press up between the rooftops, softening the geometry of the scene. Behind the towers, layers of blue-green mountain ridges recede into a horizon dotted with white cloud, and the pale facades of the town's houses scatter across the hillside like scattered sugar cubes.

The history & when to go

Santa Prisca was built in the eighteenth century, largely financed by José de la Borda, a mining magnate whose silver fortune made the project possible. Completed in 1758, it is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Churrigueresque baroque architecture in Mexico, a style known for its extraordinarily dense, almost sculptural surface ornamentation. The church has anchored Taxco's central plaza for more than two and a half centuries, and it was a key reason the Mexican government designated the entire town a national monument in 1990.

The midday sun of late spring and early summer floods those towers in strong, warm light and sets the terracotta rooftiles glowing — the closest you can get to the colours captured here.
