About the view

Taxco Plaza Mayor Gazebo

The Plaza Mayor opens wide under a vivid midday sky, its pale paving stones radiating outward in a starburst pattern that draws the eye straight to the heart of Taxco. At the center stands the gazebo — a low, open structure of warm terracotta arches and a tiled roof the color of burnt honey — framed on the right by a row of white-and-red buildings trimmed with flowering window boxes and iron balconies. Behind it all, the rose-hued dome and ornate towers of the cathedral rise against a bright cerulean sky, soft green trees spilling around them. The light is flat and generous, the kind that belongs to late morning in the mountains, washing everything in amber and coral while the shadows are still short and crisp beneath the arches.

The history & when to go

The Plaza Mayor has been the social and civic center of Taxco for centuries. The town itself was formally established in the colonial era and grew wealthy from the silver deposits in the surrounding hills, attracting merchants and craftsmen whose legacy defines the streets today. The gazebo in the square has long served as a gathering point for markets, festivals, and everyday life, and the cathedral looming behind it — Santa Prisca — was completed in 1759, funded largely by silver baron José de la Borda.

The square is at its most luminous in the late morning, before the midday heat settles in and the shadows shorten to nothing beneath the arches.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Taxco finds a home on your wall.
