About the view

Taxco Rooftop Cathedral View

The view opens from a wide rooftop terrace, its warm terracotta tiles and wrought-iron café tables leading the eye straight toward the twin towers of Santa Prisca in Taxco. The church rises in deep rose and coral against a sky caught mid-drama — bruised indigo clouds parting just enough at the horizon to release a flood of amber and gold. The towers, capped with their ornate crowns, glow almost pink against that charged dusk light, while blue-green mountains roll away on either side. A potted plant in the foreground adds a vivid dash of red, and the glassy surface of a café table mirrors the sky above, pulling the whole scene together. It is a composition that feels perfectly balanced between stillness and storm.

The history & when to go

Santa Prisca is one of the finest examples of Churrigueresque architecture in New Spain. Construction was completed in 1759, financed largely by José de la Borda, a prosperous figure in Taxco's silver-mining era. The church anchors the main plaza and has been a defining landmark of the town ever since, drawing visitors, architects, and artists for generations. It remains an active parish and a point of deep local pride.

The hour before sunset is when this rooftop view earns every bit of its drama, especially during the summer rainy season, when clouds build over the mountains and the fading light turns the church's facade a vivid, almost incandescent rose.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Taxco finds a home on your wall.
