About the view

Three Sisters Blue Mountains

Three warm pillars of ancient rock rise from the escarpment edge at the Three Sisters, caught here in the golden hour when low light turns their grooved faces a deep amber and burnt ochre. The view is taken from a lookout along the clifftop, looking across the great open drop of the Jamison Valley. Dense bush clings to the lower reaches of the formation in deep shadow greens, while behind the sisters the valley unfolds in layered ridges of cool blue-grey, each range fading softly into the next until sky and mountain barely separate. A pale wash of yellow and lavender sits at the horizon where the last of the day's light dissolves into haze.

The history & when to go

The Three Sisters are among the most recognized natural landmarks in Australia. The formation sits within the Blue Mountains National Park, part of the Greater Blue Mountains Area, a UNESCO World Heritage area covering more than one million hectares of wilderness west of Sydney. The site holds deep significance for the Gundungurra and Darug peoples, whose connection to this country stretches back tens of thousands of years, long before the escarpments had a colonial name.

Sunrise and late afternoon bring the most dramatic color to the rock faces, when the low angle of light catches every ledge and crevice and the valley haze deepens to its richest blue.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sydney finds a home on your wall.
