About the view

Sydney Harbour Bridge Night

Seen from the southern shore looking across the harbour, Sydney Harbour Bridge rises in a sweeping electric arc against a sky of deep violet and plum. The bridge's latticed frame glows in cool blue and purple light, its curve mirrored in streaks of cobalt, magenta and red that ripple across the water below. To the left, a lit ferris wheel spins its warm carnival colours into the night, while behind the arch, the city skyline blazes with scattered towers of amber, teal and white. A vessel cuts a luminous trail across the foreground, adding a sense of motion to a scene that already hums with energy. The composition draws the eye naturally upward along the arch and back down into the reflected harbour, the whole canvas alive with saturated, after-dark colour.

The history & when to go

Completed in 1932, Sydney Harbour Bridge was at the time the widest long-span bridge in the world, and its single arch remains one of the most recognisable structures on earth. The bridge connects the central business district to the North Shore and carries road, rail, cycle and pedestrian traffic. Each year it serves as the centrepiece of Sydney's New Year's Eve celebrations, hosting one of the most widely watched fireworks displays in the world.

The view is at its most spectacular during events that light the bridge in colour, though any clear night delivers a harbour scene worth the journey.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sydney finds a home on your wall.
