About the view

Sea Cliff Bridge Coastline

The view sweeps in from above, looking south along Sea Cliff Bridge as it curves elegantly between warm cliff faces and the open Tasman Sea. The vantage point is elevated, catching the full arc of the road as it bends away into a soft coastal haze. Dawn light washes the sky in layers of blush, lilac, and pale gold, while the water below shifts between deep teal and milky turquoise where waves break across dark rock shelves. The cliffs to the right rise in tiered faces of amber and rust, capped with dense green scrub, and the bridge itself becomes a graceful white ribbon threading between sea and stone.

The history & when to go

Sea Cliff Bridge, located on the coast of New South Wales south of Sydney, opened in 2005. It was built to replace a section of the Lawrence Hargrave Drive that had been repeatedly closed by rockfalls from the cliffs above. Stretching roughly 665 metres and cantilevered out over the water, it carries two lanes of traffic along one of Australia's most celebrated coastal drives. The bridge is widely regarded as a feat of engineering that preserved both the road connection and the integrity of the clifftop environment above it.

Early morning is the finest time to make this drive in person, when the low light turns the water luminous and the road is still quiet enough to feel entirely your own.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sydney finds a home on your wall.
