About the view

Bondi Icebergs Ocean Pool

The view looks out from an elevated position on Bondi's southern headland, gazing northwest across the Bondi Icebergs Ocean Pool toward the full sweep of open Pacific beyond. The pool itself commands the foreground, its lanes glowing in a vivid wash of aquamarine and teal that shifts where the light catches moving water. Foamy white swells press against the pool's outer edge, blurring the boundary between the contained and the wild. To the right, angular structures in cool glass-green tones anchor the composition, while the deep cobalt of the ocean stretches wide and unhurried beneath a cloudless Sydney sky. The headland curls away in the far distance, soft green and hazy, giving the scene both scale and stillness.

The history & when to go

Bondi Icebergs Swimming Club was founded in 1929, and the ocean pool complex on the southern end of Bondi Beach has been a fixture of the area ever since. The club's name comes from the tradition of swimming throughout winter, with membership historically requiring attendance during the coldest months of the year. Today the pool and its clubhouse are among the most recognized coastal landmarks in Australia, used year-round by lap swimmers, fitness groups, and visitors drawn as much by the setting as the water.

The view from the headland is at its most vivid on a clear winter morning, when the low sun turns the pool a deep, jewel-like green against the cold blue of the sea.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sydney finds a home on your wall.
