About the view

San Blas Tropical Island

A small, wild island sits perfectly centered against an open Caribbean sky, seen from the water's surface looking straight across the shallows toward its shore. The foreground is pure translucent turquoise, so clear that shadowy shapes of coral and rock shift beneath the surface in shades of jade and deep teal. A pale ribbon of sand rings the island's edge before giving way to a dense crown of tall palms, their feathery fronds catching bright midday sun and throwing the trunks into cool green shadow. Tucked just inside the tree line, a single small structure with a warm red roof is the only sign of human presence. Above it all, a deep cobalt sky holds a few loose wisps of white cloud. The San Blas Islands scene is wide, unhurried and luminous, the whole composition balanced around that one vivid dot of red amid so much green and blue.

The history & when to go

The San Blas archipelago is governed by the Guna Yala people under a degree of autonomy recognized by the Panamanian state, making it one of the few places in the Americas where an indigenous group retains meaningful sovereignty over its own territory. The Guna have maintained their own legal and cultural structures for generations, and their right to control development has kept these islands largely free of large-scale tourism infrastructure.

The light is at its most intense and the water at its clearest during the dry season, which runs roughly from December through April.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of San Blas Islands finds a home on your wall.
