About the view

Kuna Village Thatched Hut

A broad thatched roof dominates the center of the scene, its dry golden fronds fanning wide and low over warm amber walls raised on short stilts above a vivid green lawn. Tall palms arch in from both sides, their trunks curving like parentheses around the hut and drawing the eye straight through to the water beyond — a band of the most luminous turquoise blue, calm and flat against the horizon. Above it, billowing white clouds sit in a sky of deep cerulean, and the midday light falls clean and unhurried across everything. A small spray of yellow-green fronds brightens the lower left, adding a note of tender wildness to the otherwise composed scene. The view feels close and grounded, as though you are standing just steps away on that same grass.

The history & when to go

The Kuna — now more widely known as the Guna — have inhabited these Caribbean islands for generations, maintaining a degree of political and cultural autonomy that is formally recognized by the Panamanian government. The thatched hut, known in Guna communities as a structure central to daily and ceremonial life, is built using traditional methods passed down through families, with each element sourced from the surrounding landscape.

The dry season, running roughly from December through April, brings the steadiest sunshine and calmest seas, making the colors of sky and water as vivid in person as they appear here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of San Blas Islands finds a home on your wall.
