About the view

San Blas Starfish Shallows

The view looks straight down into the shallows, as though you are standing ankle-deep at the edge of the Caribbean and peering through glass. A single starfish rests on the pale sandy floor of the San Blas Islands, its five arms spread wide in a deep burnt orange, vivid against the rippling aqua and white-gold light that dances across the composition. Shallow waves catch the midday sun and scatter it into shifting ribbons of turquoise, teal, and near-white, making the water seem almost luminous. The starfish sits slightly left of center, its warm tone the only solid anchor in a scene that shimmers and moves in every direction around it.

The history & when to go

The San Blas archipelago sits off Panama's Caribbean coast and falls entirely within the autonomous territory of Guna Yala, governed by the Guna people under rights recognized by the Panamanian state. The Guna have maintained their cultural independence for generations, and their territory remains one of the few places in the Caribbean where Indigenous governance has remained continuous and legally protected. The islands' isolation has helped preserve both the culture and the surrounding marine environment, keeping the shallows unusually clear and the seafloor remarkably undisturbed.

The light in these shallows is most extraordinary between late morning and early afternoon, when the sun is high enough to reach straight through the water and illuminate the sand below.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of San Blas Islands finds a home on your wall.
