About the view

Old Town Square Prague

The view looks out across Old Town Square from an elevated vantage point, the wide cobbled expanse stretching below in warm morning light. To the left, a tall clock tower rises above a row of terracotta-roofed facades in deep coral and amber, its dark spire pointing sharply into a clear cerulean sky. Across the square, twin Gothic spires reach upward in near-silhouette, their jagged pinnacles dissolving against a single drifting cloud. Shadows cut long and cool across the pale paving stones, giving the composition a satisfying contrast between sun-drenched rooflines and the quiet geometry of the square below. The palette is rich but never heavy — burnt orange, dusty gold, and soft cream balanced by that bright, open sky.

The history & when to go

Old Town Square has been the civic center of Prague since the medieval period, and the clock tower on its southern edge houses one of the oldest working astronomical clocks in the world, installed in the early fifteenth century. The square witnessed coronation processions and public executions, and has served continuously as a market, a meeting ground, and a mirror of whatever era Prague was passing through.

Early morning in spring or autumn rewards visitors with raking golden light and long shadows almost identical to those captured here.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Prague finds a home on your wall.
