About the view

Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul

A paved path draws the eye straight toward the twin spires of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, rising dark and sharp against a deep cobalt sky scattered with bright cloud. The view is ground-level, perfectly centered, so the towers seem to pull you forward along the walkway. On either side, dense summer canopy frames the scene in layered greens, and below the trees, ribbon beds of red, violet, yellow and white blooms press right to the path's edge, vivid and almost electric in the full midday light. The warm stone facade darkens against all that color, giving the composition a balance that feels both grand and intimate.

The history & when to go

The basilica at Vyšehrad has been a place of worship since the eleventh century, when a church was established on this prominent bluff above the Vltava River. The current neo-Gothic structure was completed in the early twentieth century and remains one of the most significant religious sites in Prague. The adjacent cemetery holds the graves of many of the Czech Republic's most celebrated composers, writers and artists, making the entire Vyšehrad complex a place of deep national memory as much as spiritual life.

Late spring brings the flower beds to their fullest color, and the long afternoon light lifts the towers into something close to gold.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Prague finds a home on your wall.
