About the view

Old Town Square Prague

The view opens at ground level, looking straight across the wide cobblestone expanse of Old Town Square toward the Church of Our Lady before Týn in Prague. Twin dark spires pierce a soft blue sky streaked with a single coral cloud, and between them the rising sun floods the scene with a column of warm gold that spills forward across the paving stones in a long, luminous path. To the left, a powder-pink baroque facade glows in the early light; to the right, a row of narrow-fronted buildings in amber, sage and mustard catches the same warmth. Clusters of vivid red flowers in low wooden planters anchor the foreground, their color sharp and lively against the cool blue-grey of the square's open floor.

The history & when to go

The Church of Our Lady before Týn has dominated the eastern edge of Old Town Square since the fourteenth century, its twin towers rising to roughly eighty meters. For much of the fifteenth century it served as the main church of the Hussite reform movement, and it remains one of the most recognized examples of Gothic architecture in Central Europe. The surrounding square has functioned as Prague's civic and commercial center for centuries, hosting markets, public gatherings and the city's famous astronomical clock on the square.

Sunrise is the quietest and most luminous moment to experience the square in person, when the low light turns the cobblestones gold and the spires cast long shadows across an almost empty plaza.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
